Neuroma

Neuroma
Neuromas can be extremely painful and cause lots of problems with walking.  They are a swelling which occurs around a nerve bundle in between you metatarsals causing pain in that area or sometimes to spread or shoot up the foot or toes.

Neuromas can be caused by compression across the front of the foot.  Often footwear is associated with these as anything narrow or high heeled can cause the compression.   However, it is not always footwear and sometimes the way the foot works causes this compression itself.

Tips

- Generally wear loose shoes nothing tight
- Open toed sandals
- Massage in the area helps
- Orthotics can help if it is associated with poor foot function
- Sometimes steroids can be used to reduce the inflammation
- Rarely surgery is done to these to remove the nerve bundle or de-compress it.

If you are concerned about this and wish to consider a video consultation appointment with our Podiatrist they may be able to give you more specific advice and guidance.
